Rules

In our edition of broom ball the game is played with 6 players on the rink at a time per team. There is a Midfielder, two attackers, two defense-men and a goalie. When you arrive at your scheduled game time you are given 30 minutes to warm up. After this time runs down the game starts. All 6 starting players from each team line up facing each other in the center of the rink with the official in the middle, the official says to both teams "Lets all have a good, clean, fun game," the goalies walk in between everyone, shake hands, go to their nets and then all the other players shake hands. The Defense-men must go on there side of the rink behind the blue line and the attackers must go on the opposing teams side behind the blue line. The midfielders go to the mid-rink circle where the official sets down the ball in the middle of the circle. The midfielders face the opposing teams goalie and put there sticks down by the ball. The official says "Ready, Set, Go!". When the official says go, the midfielders can only use there sticks to fight for the ball. When a mid fielder takes possession of the ball the official calls "possession!" and all players may cross the blue line and join into the game.

When playing defense you can not use your body or stick to hit any players. You can block shots and try to take the ball. The only checking allowed in the game is poking and slapping the players stick when he/she has the ball. Your stick may NOT go above your shoulders no matter what. If this happens you receive a 2 minute minor penalty in the box. If it causes harm to someone you receive a 5 minute major.

Goalies are allowed to block the ball with all parts of there body. But they may not leave the crease. If a player enters the opposing teams crease it is an automatic turn over. Sticks are extensions of the body and also are not allowed to enter the crease.

Other Rules:

Once a team is attacking with possetion they can not recross the mid-rink line with the ball. If the ball crosses off an attacking person it becomes the defending teams ball. If the ball bounces off the defending team (including goalie) and crosses mid-rink it becomes the defending teams ball, if the attacking team gets to the ball first play stops, if defending team gets to the ball first play continues. The game consists of 2, 18 minute periods. If the game is tied after these 2 periods we go into a shootout. Our shoot outs are just like hockey shoot outs. If you do not understand or know what a shootout is, look up shootout rules online. If a ball ever gets shot out of the rink or a goalie freezes a ball (the goalie holds on to the ball for more than 8 second) there will be a face-off at the corner circle to either side of that goalie.

Officials

For our officials we are planning on using youth group leaders. For example, if the pythons are playing say the cougars, the panthers coach officiates (example team names). Which coach will officiate when will be determined at the beginning of the season. If you are interested in officiating games for us please visit our contact page and send us an email!
